Chinese furniture made in the late Ming dynasty (1573-1644) to early Qing dynasty (1644-1799) belongs to what is known as ‘the golden age of furniture-making’ due to the high-levels of craftsmanship and connoisseurship.
13 carefully selected pieces from the Liang Yi Collection were loaned to the Hong Kong Palace Museum for the thematic exhibition Private to Public: The History of Chinese Art Collecting in Hong Kong. These pieces are of the highest quality craftsmanship, with careful and detailed carvings and inlays, made of the rarest and most expensive woods. The design and choice of material of these pieces suggest that they were commissioned and made for the highest-ranking scholar-officials, if not the imperial household itself.
